This video explains how mathematical notation was changed, for the worse, by the printing press.
This idea made sense in 1950, when computer hardware was in its infancy and was only capable of displaying rows and columns of fixed-font characters. In 2024, our hardware is capable of much more.
Yet, we continue to use this same idea - rigid grids of characters - for “programming” today.
We struggle to express asynchronous programs because of our beliefs in old-fashioned ideas, such as grids of characters, text editors, sequentiality, etc.
