Computers Are Not Printing Presses
Computers Are Not Printing Presses
Gutenberg’s printing press enabled people to read books, affordably.
Most people don't know how to build a printing press, but they do know how to read books.
"Reading" is a form of linear thinking in 2D. Lines of text arranged on paper. English-speakers read from top-to-bottom and left-to-right. Letters - text - constitute one dimension, say the X dimension. Lines constitute another dimension, say Y. Written text is essentially (x,y) - two dimensions.
Computers - reprogrammable electronic machines (RePrEMs) - can be a better medium than paper. Computers allow us to create “something” in 4 dimensions - x, y, z, t. (Z is depth, t is time).
Most people don’t need to know how to program computers, they simply need to use this new, 4D, medium.
People need to use this new medium for “something”. I guess that we’re still figuring out what that “something” is.
Possibly interesting developments:
Blender (access to massive amounts of computation in 4 dimensions)
Gaming - a brand new industry
Smart phones, internet - ubiquitous computing power, highly decoupled and distributed
Robotics (100’s of decentralized processing units coordinated by a central coordinator)
